GPB Television is airing The Wanderer: A Story of Slavery, Survival, and the Strength to Prevail on Tuesday, October 6th, 2020 at 8:30pm.
Fifty years after Congress declared slavery illegal, Savannah slave-owner Charles Lamar embarks on a bold scheme in 1858 to secretly transport enslaved Africans to Georgia. Acquiring the Wanderer, the fastest sailing ship in the New York Yacht Club, Lamar outfits it as a slaver and then quickly sends the vessel to Africa.
Captives are purchased from traders on the Congo River and tightly confined below deck. The group endures unsanitary living conditions and of the nearly 500 taken only 409 survive. For the survivors landing on Jekyll Island, Georgia the challenges are just beginning.
Uncover the story behind one of the last known slave ships coming to America and discover the distinctive heritage known as Gullah-Geechee culture.
Directed and Produced by College of Coastal Georgia Associate Professor Tyler E. Bagwell, The Wanderer is 27 minutes in length and is the winner of 3 Telly Awards and was nominated for 2 Southeastern Emmys!
