VA Education Benefits

New Students Applying for Veterans Benefits

Veterans and dependents, if you are applying for VA Education Benefits for the first time, please note the following guidelines:

In addition to the general admission procedures, students applying for veterans benefits will need to take some additional steps.

CHAPTER 33 ( POST 9/11 VETERANS EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE)

  1. Visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved, provide a copy of VA Application and copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY (COE) to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office. DD-214 member 4, and Kicker Contract documents required from veterans only.
  3. Once registered for classes, submit the Veterans Enrollment Certification Request form electronically.

CHAPTER 30 (MONTGOMERY GI BILL® – ACTIVE DUTY EDUCATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM)

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Educational Benefits (Form 22-1990) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved, provide a copy of VA application and Copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY(COE) along with DD-214 member 4, and Kicker Contract submit to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.
  3. Once registered for classes, submit the Veterans Enrollment Certification Request form electronically.

CHAPTER 1606 (MONTGOMERY GI BILL® – SELECTED RESERVE EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM)

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Education Benefits (Form 22-1990) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved, provide a copy of VA application and Copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY(COE) NOBE and (Form DD-2384); obtain from you unit and a copy of the Kicker Contract and submit to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.
  3. Once registered for classes, submit the Veterans Enrollment Certification Request form electronically.

CHAPTER 1607 (RESERVE EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM – REAP)

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Education Benefits (Form 22-1990) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved, provide a copy of VA application and Copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY(COE) NOBE and (Form DD-2384); obtain from you unit and a copy of the Kicker Contract and submit to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.
  3. Once registered for classes, submit the Veterans Enrollment Certification Request form electronically.

CHAPTER 31 (VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM)

  1. The Department of Veteran Affairs Rehabilitation Counselor must provide you with the Authorization and Certification of Entrance or Re-entrance into Rehabilitation and Certification Status.
  2. Once approved, provide a copy of the (22-1905) to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.
  3. Once registered for classes, submit the Veterans Enrollment Certification Request form electronically.

CHAPTER 35 (APPLICATION FOR SURVIVORS AND DEPENDENTS EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE FORM

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Education Benefits (Form 22-5490) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved, provide a copy of the (22-1905) to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.
  3. Once registered for classes, submit the Veterans Enrollment Certification Request form electronically.

IF YOU HAVE USED VA BENEFITS AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION SCHOOL AND ARE TRANSFERRING TO COASTAL GEORGIA:

Veterans

  • Complete the request for change of program or place of training form (VA Form 22-1995) to declare a new school and new program.

Dependents

  • Survivor and eligible dependent transfer students should complete (VA-Form 22-5495) request for change of program or place of training survivors and dependents’ education assistance.

Notes:

  • It takes approximately 30-60 days for the Veterans Administration to process an application. Payments are usually received within 6-10 weeks.
  • Payments are issued based on the type of education benefits you are receiving and the number of enrolled hours and program of study.
  • Plan to Pay for your tuition and fees (not covered by your VA Educations benefits) by the payment deadline.
  • Students are encouraged to complete the free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) Free Application Free Student Aid.

Veteran’s Benefits

  • It takes approximately 30-60 days for the Veterans Administration to process an application. Payments are usually received within 6-10 weeks.
  • Payments are issued based on the type of education benefits you are receiving and the number of enrolled hours and program of study.
  • The Office of Financial Aid must be notified that you have applied for VA educational benefits since it is possible that receipt of VA funds could affect federal guaranteed loans and grants.

Student Responsibilities

  • Notify Financial Aid that you are applying for VA educational benefits and the amount of such benefits including buy-ups, kickers, etc.
  • Plan To Pay for your tuition and fees by the fee deadline through means of your own. Students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please visit Financial Aid for more information
  • Attend class according to the professor’s policy. Failing a class because of attendance reasons will result in decreased payments.
  • Report Immediately
    • Graduation
    • Repeat Courses
    • Change of Address
    • Change of Major
    • Withdrawal From School
    • Change in Hours (withdrawals or increases)
  • Monitor your curriculum with your advisor. Classes not pertaining to your degree will not be paid for by VA.
  • Verify your attendance on the last day of each month if you are Chapter 30, 1606 or 1607. Payment will not be generated for you by VA unless this takes place.
  • Withdrawing from a class: If you withdraw from a class during the semester, you must notify the VA certifying official.

Work Study

  • The work-study program allows you to perform work for VA in return for an hourly wage. You may perform outreach services under the supervision of a VA employee, prepare and process VA paperwork, or work in the Veterans’ Lounges on the Brunswick or Camden campuses.
  • You must train at the three-quarter or full-time rate. The maximum number of hours you may work is 25 times the number of weeks in your enrollment period. Payments will be at the Federal minimum wage or your State minimum wage, whichever is greater. To apply, contact Ineia Mansfield in the Office of Student Life and Housing to determine position availability and for procedures for completing the application process.

Applying for Admission:
  1. Review the information on Coastal Georgia’s Admissions website for the admissions pathway that applies to you (freshman or transfer).
  2. Complete the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), which must be submitted to be considered for any financial aid.
  3. Communicate with Admissions at 912-279-5701, or by email at admissions@ccga.edu.
Veterans Study Lounges

The College has two veterans’ lounges available for students to utilize for quiet studying options and to meet other military students. One is located on the Brunswick Campus – the other at the Camden Center.

Military Lounge

The lounge at the Camden Center is located behind the Dockside Deli. The lounge on the Brunswick Campus is located in the Student Activities Center.

VALOR
VALOR (Veterans Academic Learning Opportunities & Resources) is a student organization that provides support to armed forces veterans, active military, or retired military persons in their transition into the college experience.
VALOR meetings are also open to military family members, faculty, staff, and any interested student, regardless if they are military or not. The meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. in the Veteran’s Lounge on the Brunswick Campus.

College Guide for Service Members and Veterans

Coastal Georgia works to foster and encourage a military community, whether on campus, online, or overseas. We work to support our military community by providing military and veteran students with resources and services developed to help them succeed.

Veterans Study Lounges

  • The College of Coastal Georgia has two veterans’ lounges available for students to utilize for quiet studying options and to meet other military students. They are located in the Student Activities Center on the Brunswick Campus, and behind the Dockside Deli at the Camden Center.

Academic Tutoring

  • The Academic Tutoring and Instruction Center provides academic support to all Coastal Georgia students. Located in the Correll Center in Brunswick and the Camden Center, the ATTIC offers something for everyone. In an effort to help students evaluate their academic strengths and weaknesses and succeed in college, the ATTIC provides free tutoring services.

Counseling and Accessibility Services

  • The Office of Counseling Services offers individual counseling with a focus on helping students eliminate barriers to academic success. Students seeking personal counseling must be enrolled for four or more hours and must be currently attending class at the time counseling is sought. Students requiring or requesting long-term or intensive therapy will be referred to off-campus providers and support groups as appropriate.
     

  • The Office of Counseling Services provides a comprehensive program of services designed to:

    • Provide personal counseling to students who are experiencing personal problems which may be interfering with their adjustment to college.

    • Accessibility Services coordinates and provides a variety of services for students with physical and learning disabilities. Our aim is to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to all programs offered at the College of Coastal Georgia.
