If you are looking for a great choice for your bachelor’s degree, you have found the right place! General Mathematics is in high demand. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2018 and 2028, the job market for mathematicians is expected to grow by 27 percent, adding about 56,000 jobs to the workforce. This – coupled with the median salary for math occupations of over $90,000 in 2019 – make this concentration a “win-win” choice!
This concentration is designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts and structures that underlie all mathematics, as well as to give the functional knowledge necessary to apply mathematical ideas and techniques to “real world” problems. Specifically, the concentration focuses on the continuous aspects of mathematics (real analysis), the discrete aspects (abstract algebra), geometry, optimization (operation research), computation (programming courses), and statistics. The concentration also allows the student to explore other topics such as logic, number theory, complex analysis, and subjects within applied mathematics.
Dr. Lugo earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Purdue University. His interests include Data Science, Operator algebras, C* -Algebras, topological groups, and Mathematics Education.
Our engaging, caring, and attentive faculty work diligently to not only teach General Mathematics, but also to prepare students in this concentration for graduate study and undergraduate research programs (many of which have resulted in publications and presentations at national conferences). You are not just another number at Coastal Georgia. The small student-to-faculty ratio allows students in this concentration to benefit from engaging with faculty inside and outside the classroom, as well as from the community of their peers. As testament to this, over the years, this concentration has produced some of Coastal Georgia’s top students (L: 2019 and 2020 President’s Award Recipients, D. Hernandez-Delgado and Julia Garner). Moreover, our very active Math & Data Science Club provides opportunities for students to give presentations and meet faculty and professionals from across the country.
Unlike many fields, mathematics is quite agile. Mathematicians are trained thinkers and problem solvers, and these are skills that employers are looking for. The General Mathematics concentration will open a myriad of career options, including research, teaching, data science, computer science, engineering, marine biology, environmental science, finance, software development, animation, and more. Within these opportunities, some of our recent students have become teachers and programming professionals, and others have been accepted to distinguished graduate programs at schools like Emory and Purdue University.
