Brunswick, GA – State Representative Alex Atwood will be the speaker for the inaugural President’s Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, November 18 at 6 p.m. in the Stembler Theatre, Campus Center, College of Coastal Georgia, Brunswick. The lecture is free and open to the community.
The title of Rep. Atwood’s lecture is “Where are you, Mr. Washington? Thoughts on effective leadership in today’s political environment.” He elaborated, “Important and often complex issues face our state and country. In the current supercharged political environment, can today’s leaders learn lessons from the past?
“I believe we can. Confronting these issues may seem overwhelming, but the task is far from impossible.”
The goal of the distinguished lecture series, according to College President Dr. Gregory Aloia, is to bring national, state, and community leaders and experts in law, politics, science, literature, and popular culture to campus to engage students, faculty and the greater community on current issues of importance. “Each lecture will be unique and each lecturer is free to discuss how their life experiences, including their views on personal leadership, brought them to their current position,” Dr. Aloia said. “These will be very special lectures presented by very special people.”
A respected practicing attorney and retired colonel of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Rep. Atwood was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2010, representing House District 179. The district serves sections of Glynn County, Brunswick and the Golden Isles.
His distinguished career includes 34 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in ground, aviation and Intelligence positions. In 1982, the Commandant of Marine Corps selected then-Captain Alex Atwood as the Marine Reserve Outstanding Junior Officer. Rep. Atwood returned to active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom.
As an attorney and federal agent, he served domestically and internationally, assigned to executive branch agencies such as the Department of Defense, the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Homeland Security. As Director of Legal Training for FLETC, he educated thousands of law enforcement officers and agents.
As an attorney whose public and private careers illustrate not only outstanding legal abilities, but also community dedication, Rep. Atwood was named a Fellow of the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia.
As a legislator, Rep. Atwood serves on the Appropriations, non-civil Judiciary and Insurance committees of the Georgia House. He is currently vice-chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee and secretary of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee as well as majority caucus deputy whip.
The former Glynn County Magistrate Judge is now the senior partner of the law firm of Atwood Choate, P.C., with offices in Atlanta and St. Simons Island. He also maintains his family residence and district legislative office on St. Simons Island.
