More than 85 percent of the students who attend Coastal Georgia receive some type of financial aid. This aid is funded through federal, state, outside scholarships and institutional scholarship funds. Coastal Georgia has many dedicated donors who continue to graciously fund our scholarships that enable us to assist more than 500 students with scholarship funds. During the 2023-2024 academic year, our scholarship awards varied from $150.00 to $11,800.00, totaling more than $700,000 for the year.

The College of Coastal Georgia has teamed up with Scholarship Universe to provide a streamlined application process that maximizes the opportunity for our students to receive scholarship dollars. The new application provides the following features:
- Student data from our database is paired with information completed during the application process to provide a holistic view of individual students’ candidacy for scholarships.
- Completed applications are matched with internal Coastal Georgia scholarship profiles, and students are automatically entered into consideration for these awards.
- Additionally, student applications are matched with Scholarship Universe’s external scholarship database, producing a list of potential opportunities for students to explore.

Scholarship Interview Day will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025 in the Gould Memorial Library on the Brunswick Campus. Check in begins at 10:30 a.m. and interviews start at 11 a.m.
The College of Coastal Georgia rewards incoming freshmen students by automatically awarding $1,200 in scholarship dollars to high achieving students. To qualify for these awards, students must meet the following criteria:
- Admitted to the College of Coastal Georgia as a first-time freshman
- Earned a minimum 3.75 high school grade point average
- Completed the College’s General Scholarship Application by Feb. 1
- Completed the scholarship acceptance process by May 1
- Take 12+ credit hours each semester during the award period
Scholarship awards are $1,200 for one year and paid in equal parts for fall and spring semesters.
FAQs
Q: Will this scholarship automatically be applied to my account?
A: No. You must complete the College’s general scholarship application by February 1 to qualify. If you meet the scheduled criteria, you will be offered the scholarship, but the award will not be applied to your account until you complete the Award Acceptance process (i.e. survey, thank you letter, etc.) on or before May 1. Watch your Coastal Georgia email for instructions on how to do this.
Q: What if I complete my scholarship application after February 1?
A: You may still be considered for other competitive scholarships from the College, but you won’t be guaranteed the High Achiever Freshmen Scholar Award.
Q: Is this scholarship renewable after my freshman year?
A: No. The High Achiever Freshmen Scholar scholarship is only for your freshmen year. Students are encouraged to complete the scholarship application process each year to qualify for other scholarship opportunities we award at the College. Typically, High Achiever Freshman Scholars are very competitive for other departmental and institutional scholarships.
Q: Will I receive $1,200 per year or $1,200 per semester?
A: Your $1,200 scholarship will be split equally between the fall and spring semesters – $600 each semester.
Q: Are there requirements in order to receive the scholarship for both the fall and spring semester?
A: Yes, in order to receive funding, students must maintain good academic and financial aid standing.
Q: What if I enter the College for the first time in the summer term? Will I qualify for this scholarship?
A: Maybe. Students first entering the College in the summer term after they graduate from high school will qualify for the program, but the scholarship will not pay until the start of the following Fall term.
Q: If I receive the High Achiever Freshman Scholar scholarship, will I be considered for other scholarship opportunities through the College?
A: Probably not. Typically, students selected for the High Achiever Freshmen Scholar scholarship are not considered for other Coastal Georgia scholarships. In the rare occasion you are, we will award you the higher of the two scholarships. The High Achiever Freshmen Scholar scholarship cannot be “stacked” with other institutional academic scholarships.
Q: Once I’m awarded this scholarship, is there anything else I have to do?
A: Yes! We will ask that you go through the scholarship acceptance process, which includes your answering a few questions and submitting a well-written thank you note. Be on the lookout in your Coastal Georgia email for more information about this process. This must be completed by May 1 or the High Achiever Freshman Scholar scholarship will be revoked.

Grants are gift aid that is not repaid. Only undergraduates who have not previously received a bachelor’s degree are eligible. Grants are awarded to those who exhibit exceptional financial need and apply for aid by the priority filing date.
Pell Grants are need-based grants awarded to eligible undergraduate students who do not have a bachelor’s degree. Award amounts are based on the assumption of full-time enrollment. Award amounts may be reduced for less than full-time enrollment. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education.
Eligibility
- Demonstrate financial need, as determined by federal need-analysis methodology(FAFSA).
- Enrolled in an eligible public college, university, or technical college as an undergraduate student seeking a college degree or technical certificate/diploma.
- Must not have earned bachelor’s or graduate level college degree.
- Be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S. or have evidence from INS of eligible permanent resident alien status.
- Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements.
- Not be in default or owe a refund on a federal financial aid program.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress, as defined by the college.
Award Amount

The maximum Pell Grant award is $6,195 for the 2019-2020 award year. Each recipient’s award may vary, depending upon the expected family contribution and the number of hours the student is enrolled.
Pell Recalculation Period
(College of Coastal Georgia may from time to time have to recalculate these dates due to adverse weather conditions)
- It is the College of Coastal Georgia’s practice to freeze hours during each term in order to properly recalculate the student’s pell eligibility. It has been the practice to freeze hours approximately four weeks after the start of the fall semester, three weeks after the start of the spring semester and two weeks after the start of the summer semester. Within each semester there are mini-sessions that have separate freeze dates. These dates are typically the day after verification of attendance is due for the sessions.

Calculating Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Used
The amount of Federal Pell Grant funds a student may receive over his or her lifetime is limited by a new federal law to be the equivalent of six years of Pell Grant funding. Since the maximum amount of Pell Grant funding a student can receive each year is equal to 100 percent, the six-year equivalent is 600 percent.
How is my Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Used calculated?
- Scheduled Award: The maximum amount of Pell Grant funding you can receive is calculated for an “award year.” An award year is a period from July 1 of one calendar year to June 30 of the next calendar year. Your “scheduled award” is partially determined by using your expected family contribution (EFC) that is calculated from the information you (and your family) provided when you filed your FAFSA. Your scheduled award is the maximum amount you would be able to receive for the award year if you were enrolled full-time for the full school year. Your scheduled award represents 100 percent of your Pell Grant eligibility for that award year.
- Percent Used: To determine how much of the maximum six years (600 percent) of Pell Grant you have used each year, the Department compares the actual amount you received for the award year with your scheduled award amount for that award year. Of course, if you receive the full amount of your scheduled award, you will have used 100 percent. Some students do not receive their entire scheduled award for an award year. There are a number of reasons for this, the most common of which are that the student was not enrolled for the full year or that the student was not enrolled full-time, or both.
- If you did not receive the full amount of your scheduled award, we calculate the percentage of the scheduled award that you did receive. For example, if your scheduled award for an award year is $5,000, but because you were enrolled for only one semester you received only $2,500, you would have received 50 percent of the scheduled award for that award year. Or if you received only $3,750 for the award year because you were enrolled three-quarter-time and not full-time, you would have received 75 percent for that year.
- Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU): The Department keeps track of your LEU by adding together the percentages of your Pell Grant scheduled awards that you received for each award year. The table below shows examples of the LEUs of three students who received differing amounts of their scheduled awards over a four year period.
Of course, if a student’s LEU equals or exceeds 600 percent, the student may no longer receive Pell Grant funding. Similarly, a student whose LEU is greater than 500 percent but less than 600 percent, while eligible for a Pell Grant for the next award year, will not be able to receive a full scheduled award.
How can I see my Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) percentage?
- You can log on to our National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) Student Access Web site using your Federal Student Aid ID and password and view your LEU. The LEU will be found on the Financial Aid Review page.

SEOG is awarded to undergraduate students who do not have a bachelor’s degree and who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Award amounts vary and preference is given to students who apply before May 1. Student must complete the FAFSA to be considered for SEOG. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education.
Eligibility

Award Amount
The maximum FSEOG award is $4,000 per year. Each recipient’s award amount varies depending upon the expected family contribution compared to the cost of attendance, the number of hours in which the student is enrolled. Generally, eligible students are awarded $450 for the academic year.
All eligible students who complete the FAFSA before May 1 are considered for SEOG.
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is awarded by Coastal Georgia to students who are completing coursework to begin a career in teaching and who agree to serve for a minimum of four years as a full-time, highly-qualified, high-need field teacher in a low-income school. Funding is provided by The US Department of Education.
Eligibility
- Must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) here for the academic year the student wishes to receive the TEACH Grant. Please note that the TEACH Grant is not based on financial need.
- Meet certain academic achievement requirements:
- Incoming transfers accepted into the Bachelor of Science Middle Grades Education, Early Childhood/Special Education, Secondary Biology Education or Secondary Math Education program must have a transferable cumulative college grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or higher or have scored above the 75th percentile on at least one battery of a nationally recognized admissions tests such as the SAT or ACT.
- Current Coastal Georgia students accepted into the Bachelor of Science Middle Grades Education, Early Childhood/Special Education, Secondary Biology Education or Secondary Math Education program must have a cumulative college grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or higher or have scored above the 75th percentile on at least one battery of a nationally recognized admissions tests such as the SAT or ACT.
- Enroll in coursework necessary to complete teacher certification in a high-need field.
- Complete the College of Coastal Georgia TEACH Grant Application.
- Complete TEACH Grant Entrance Counseling and the Agreement to Serve (ATS) at the US Department of Education’s website here. You MUST update your TEACH Grant Counseling and ATS every year.
Award Amount
Eligible full-time students may receive up to $4,000 per year in TEACH Grand funds (up to $2,000 per semester); up to a maximum of $8,000 for undergraduate study only.
Important Information
Upon completing your degree, you MUST complete TEACH Grant Exit Counseling here. If students awarded the TEACH Grant do not complete the four years of qualified teaching service within eight years of completing the course of study for which the TEACH Grant was received or otherwise fail to meet any other requirement of the TEACH Grant, the grant will convert into a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, with interest accrued and capitalized from the date of original disbursement.
HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally) is Georgia’s unique scholarship program that rewards students with financial assistance in degree, diploma, and certificate programs at eligible Georgia public and private colleges and universities, as well as public technical colleges.
HOPE is funded entirely by the Georgia Lottery for Education, which also funds Georgia’s statewide pre-kindergarten program. Since the HOPE Program began in 1993, over $3.5 billion in HOPE funds have been awarded to more than 1 million students attending Georgia’s colleges, universities, and technical colleges. You can benefit from HOPE in several ways.
HOPE Scholarship
Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement at the high school and/or college level. The scholarship provides funds to assist with tuition for students who are pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in Georgia’s public and private colleges and universities.
Students who become HOPE eligible for the first time or students who have lost HOPE and again become eligible must apply or reapply for HOPE at www.gafutures.org, while those who have lost HOPE must also complete the HOPE Priority Evaluation form. Transfer students with HOPE eligibility must also complete the form to maintain their eligibility at Coastal Georgia. Both of these forms are found on the portal under Financial Aid forms on the HOME page.

Eligibility
To receive HOPE Scholarship funding, students must:
- Have graduated from an eligible high school with a “B” average, as defined by the HOPE program, or have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average at the college level at specific credit-hour checkpoints. Students who earned a GED or graduated from an ineligible high school or home study program may qualify for a HOPE Scholarship, as an entering freshman, based on their SAT or ACT scores.
- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at an eligible public or private college or university or technical college in Georgia. Meet HOPE’s Georgia residency requirements.
- Meet HOPE’s U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements.
- Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements.
- Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990. A student may be ineligible for HOPE payment if he or she has been convicted for committing certain felony offenses involving marijuana, controlled substances, or dangerous drugs.
- Not be in default or owe a refund on a student financial aid program.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the college.
STEM Courses (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Effective Fall 2017, when calculating the HOPE Scholarship postsecondary GPA, an additional weight of 0.5 will be added to grades of B, C, and D for approved degree level science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses taken at an eligible postsecondary institution Fall 2017 or later.

Funding provided to HOPE scholars varies by type of institution.
Award Limits
A college degree-seeking student is ineligible for the HOPE Scholarship if the student has:
- Received payment from any combination of HOPE Scholarship, HOPE Grant, and Accel Program funds totaling 127 semester (190 quarter) hours of credit; or
- Attempted 127 semester (190 quarter) hours of college degree credit, regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while attempting the hours; or
- Has earned a baccalaureate (four-year) college degree, regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while earning the degree.

The Zell Miller Scholarship is a Georgia scholarship program that is funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education. It is a reward for scholastic achievement and an incentive to continue working hard in school. The program rewards exemplary performance in high school with tuition scholarships at Georgia public and private colleges and technical schools.
Zell Miller will pay 100% of the standard tuition rate (this does not include any fees) for each Georgia public and private colleges and technical schools.
Enrollment
- You must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program offered by an eligible public or private college or university or public technical college in Georgia.
- There is no minimum number of hours per semester, or quarter, of enrollment required for eligibility at a public institution.
- Students attending private colleges and universities must be enrolled at least six (6) hours to receive an award.
Credit Hours and HOPE Cumulative Grade Point Average for Renewal
- Students who are eligible to receive the Zell Miller Scholarship as entering freshmen may receive payment through the term during which the number of attempted (not earned) credits equal at least 30 semester or 45 quarter hours. All Zell Miller Scholarship recipients must have a grade point average of at least a 3.3 at the end of every spring term in order to continue their eligibility, except for freshmen enrolled for less than 12 credit hours for each of their first three school terms. Freshmen recipients who enroll for less than 12 credit hours for each of their first three school terms must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.3 at the end of their third term in order to continue their eligibility.
- All attempted hours after high school graduation or equivalent and corresponding grades, as shown on official transcripts, are counted toward the HOPE cumulative grade point average, including remedial study attempted or accepted for degree credit prior to Fall term 2011. Additionally, withdrawals are counted as attempted hours even if there is no academic penalty.
- If you have a HOPE cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.3 at the end of the term you attempted 30 semester or 45 quarter hours, you may renew your scholarship for 31 through 60 semester hours or 46 through 90 quarter hours attempted.
- If you have earned a HOPE cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.3 at the end of the term you attempted 60 semester or 90 quarter hours, you may renew your scholarship for 61 through 90 semester hours or 91 through 135 quarter hours attempted.
- If you have earned a HOPE cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.3 at the end of the term you attempted 90 semester or 135 quarter hours, you may renew your scholarship for 91 through 127 semester hours or 136 through 190 quarter hours attempted. However, the total cumulative number of credit hours for which you can receive payment from any combination of the HOPE Scholarship, Zell Miller Scholarship, HOPE Grant, and Accel (through Spring term 2011) programs is 127 semester hours or 190 quarter hours.
School Transfers
- Zell Miller Scholarship recipients transferring from one HOPE-eligible Georgia institution to another HOPE-eligible institution are eligible for Zell Miller Scholarship funds if they continue to meet all of the eligibility requirements.
- All college degree credit hours attempted at any college, and the corresponding grades, are counted toward the HOPE cumulative grade point average, even if those hours and grades are not accepted by the institution to which the student transferred.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
- In order to receive payment each school term, you must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress as determined by your institution even if you have not reached the renewal checkpoints as indicated in the “Credit Hours and HOPE Cumulative Grade Point Average for Renewal” section above.
Default and Refund Due
- In order to receive payment each term, you must not be in default or owe a refund on any federal or State of Georgia student loan, grant or scholarship. If you have ever gone into default on a federal or State of Georgia student loan, you must repay your loan completely or totally resolve your default status before you will be eligible for Zell Miller Scholarship funds.
Regaining the Scholarship
- The Zell Miller Scholarship is a reward for scholastic achievement and an incentive to continue working hard in school. If your cumulative grade point average is below 3.3 at the end of a spring term, after your first three terms of enrollment for less than 12 hours per term, or after attempting 30 semester or 45 quarter hours, you may regain the Zell Miller Scholarship after attempting 60 semester or 90 quarter hours with a cumulative 3.3 GPA.
- If you do not earn a cumulative 3.3 GPA after attempting 60 semester or 90 quarter hours, you may still regain the Zell Miller Scholarship after attempting 90 semester or 135 quarter hours with a cumulative 3.3 GPA.
- You cannot regain Zell Miller Scholarship eligibility at the end of a spring term, unless that term is also when you have attempted 30/60/90 semester or 45/90/135 quarter hours with a cumulative 3.3 grade point average. Beginning Fall term 2011, a student may only regain the Zell Miller Scholarship one time.
Re-applying for the Zell Miller Scholarship
- Depending on your personal circumstances or the college you attend, one of several different forms may be used to reapply for the Zell Miller Scholarship each year. Contact the financial aid office, at the institution you will attend, for specific application instructions that best suit your situation. You must file an application before the end of the school term in order to receive payment for that school term.
- The college you are attending may also require that you complete the institution’s application for financial aid or other additional forms. Please contact the financial aid office for more information.
STEM Courses (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Effective Fall 2017, when calculating the HOPE Scholarship postsecondary GPA, an additional weight of 0.5 will be added to grades of B, C, and D for approved degree level science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses taken at an eligible postsecondary institution Fall 2017 or later. The federal work study (FWS) program is designed to provide students the chance to pay part of their educational expenses by working at a part-time job. To be employed under this program, the student must show evidence of financial need, enroll in a Title IV eligible program, attend a mandatory interview, and maintain good academic standing while employed under the program. The hourly wage must be at least the current federal minimum wage and is based on fund availability. Please visit Human Resources to see current FWS employment opportunities.
Student Assistant Program:
This program, sponsored entirely by the College of Coastal Georgia, employs students on a part-time basis in most departments on campus. Financial need is not a major determinant, although it is not entirely disregarded. For more information, please contact the specific office or department where you would like to work.
The mission of the Veterans Services staff at the College of Coastal Georgia is to cultivate a campus community for veterans who are well-informed about the benefits they have earned; a community in which the transition from service to student is made as smoothly as possible so that our veterans can be focused and committed to academic success. We strive to engage all veterans in campus-wide programs and activities that will enhance their college experience and all aspects of their educational goals. We commit ourselves to helping veterans build a solid foundation for their future through a veteran-friendly campus environment. College of Coastal Georgia serves a diverse group of military personnel, their family members, and veterans with disabilities. Our students are from all branches of the armed forces including active and inactive reserve units.
