Mariner Recreation wants members of the campus community to achieve the highest level of health possible. Recreation’s mission for The Helm is to improve the health and well-being of everyone in the Coastal Georgia campus community and to promote an environment that will encourage the lifelong practice of health and fitness.
The Helm has cardio machines, strength training equipment, and free weights. The variety of machines will offer users several options while working out, and by adjusting the intensity and resistance, you can achieve desired changes in your body. Group fitness classes are also available throughout the week in multiple disciplines. Staff is available to spot and answer general questions. The Boom Recreation Room is also located in the Student Activity Center. It is a hub for campus activities with open hours in the afternoons, evenings, and on weekends. The facility features billiards, ping-pong, air hockey, foosball, and flat screen TVs. Within the center is a space dedicated to gaming, complete with lounge furniture, flat screens featuring XboxOne, PS4, and WiiU.
The Helm/Boom Rec Room will be closed on holidays and scheduled breaks in the semester. However, there may be modified hours during some breaks. The Helm/Boom Rec Room is free for all College of Coastal Georgia students, faculty, and staff with a valid College ID. All users must sign a waiver every academic year.
The Anchor/Coffin Gym houses a space specific to intimate workout sessions and serves as a space unique to student athletes. The Anchor Fitness area was upgraded with newer equipment in 2023-2024 and also houses the cardio/dance floor used by fitness instructors and other clubs/org groups for activities. For those Mariners with free time between classes, Athletics shares the Coffin Gymnasium at designated times in partnership with Recreation and Wellness.
At Coastal Georgia, outdoor activities include programs like kayak tours, stand-up paddle boarding, bike tours, game trips, ropes course training, on-campus sand volleyball, nature hikes, rock climbing and alternative spring break trips.
Mariner Recreation added an outdoor fitness trail with a pathway that starts on the west side of the Howard Coffin Building and loops around the lake. The trail features an area with outdoor fitness equipment. From start to finish, the track is 1-mile, and one lap around the lake is 4/10th of a mile. This addition is great for Mariners looking to change up your workout or just want to get outside for a little fresh air.
For Coastal exposure, Mariner Recreation collaborates with the surrounding community to expose students to new opportunities for growth and employment.

Intramural sports are an integral part of Student Life at the College of Coastal Georgia. Most IM sports take place on our Brunswick campus, and a diverse group of students come out each semester – either to play or support some of their classmates. At Coastal Georgia, students find that intramurals are a great way to not only engage in physical activity, but also to interact with their peers and build new relationships. Mariner Recreation is always seeking new ways to accommodate student requests and build a thriving campus community. If you have an idea about a new sport, or have questions about current offerings, please email recreationwellness@ccga.edu.
You must complete the online registration before you can participate in intramural sports. Please visit www.imleagues.com/ccga to complete the one-time registration process. IM Leagues helps intramural participants manage their personal IM profile, create and join teams for all the recreational sports Coastal Georgia offers. Register today!
The Club Sport program coordinated by Mariner Recreation includes some of the fastest growing student organizations at Coastal Georgia. Club Sports are for students who seek long-term playing periods in comparison to the shorter intramural seasons. Teams typically compete throughout both fall and spring semesters.
Club Sports are unique student organizations. The overall duties of the team, or organization, are fulfilled by students. They may be organized for instructional, recreational and/or competitive purposes. Club Sports help individuals build relationships with other students who share similar interests.
Current organized clubs include soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
