A Week of Welcome

A new semester at the College of Coastal Georgia kicked off on Monday with a Week of Welcome for new students as well as students returning after a month-long winter break. The week consisted of various activities across campus to jump start the Spring 2018 semester.

Faculty and staff greeted students at designated welcome stations on both the Brunswick campus and the Camden Center. Students asked for directions, grabbed some coffee, tea, or hot chocolate on the way to class, and even received a few College-branded items.

Mariner Leadership Academy

On Wednesday, Interim President Dr. Meg Amstutz launched the Mariner Leadership Academy spring semester series with a presentation entitled “Leading A Team with Dr. Amstutz” at the Stembler Theatre.

The Mariner Leadership Academy, hosted by the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, offers leadership development opportunities through presentations and experiences for students.

Students enjoyed lunch as Amstutz discussed team leadership and important qualities to have when composing a team.

Amstutz used tools in a toolbox to symbolize important team member qualities. A hammer represented the visionary of the group, someone who is driven and sets goals. Glue is the collaborator, the person who connects and works well with others. Measuring tape represented detail-oriented people and a sketchpad symbolized creative individuals, who want to try new things.

“All of these attributes are important to a team,” Amstutz said. “If you’re missing one of those four elements on your team, you really need to think about adding it. You’ll get a better result if you have a little bit of all in the room.”

Amstutz shared her personal experiences, discussed the role of a leader, stressed the importance of listening, and answered students’ questions.

Over at the Student Activity Center, the Student Health Center hosted “Bingo On The Rocks” where participants learned more about drugs and alcohol. During the game, he definition of a word related to drugs or alcohol was read, and then participants marked on that word on their bingo card if it they had it. Prizes included headphones, t-shirts, and snacks. The game also coincided with National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, Jan. 22 to Jan. 28.

There is such a thing as a free lunch!

The Wesley Foundation started its weekly Free Lunch Thursdays with Chick-Fil-A at the Pavilion by Teel Lake. Students ate lunch, played corn hole, and hung out with friends before heading to class. Bryan Kelso, team member of the Wesley Foundation, said everyone is welcome to come out for lunch.

“We’re here until about 1 p.m. and sometimes later if students pick up a volleyball or basketball game,” he said. “It’s just a good time to relax from the busy week and meet new people.”

Free Lunch Thursdays started last year with 20 students but quickly grew to an attendance of between 60 to 70 students. Students can sign-up to receive text alerts and email reminders about the lunch.

Jamie Renee and the Walkers, a local jazz-infused, folky pop band, performed at the Anchor for students at “Rec the Night” Thursday. Students came out for good music, food and games.

The first week also included a Campus Resource Fair, movie nights and special events in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

At the Camden Center students watched the movie “Wonder Woman”, enjoyed a BBQ Lunch and attended an Involvement Fair.

The Week of Welcome will continue next week with a Home Run Derby held at the Lakeside Courtyard, Student Employment Fair, Black History Month Kick Off, a hypnotist and more.
