Brunswick, GA – Dr. Elizabeth Wurz, Associate Professor of English, School of Arts and Sciences, and Director of the Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement, has been selected to serve on the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Community Engagement Through Higher Education Executive Committee. The group of regional service-learning leaders will be meeting during the 2015 Summit hosted by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service on March 11-13. Additionally, Dr. Lydia Watkins, Assistant Professor of Nursing, and student Hali Strayer; Dr. Laura Lynch, Assistant Professor of Mathematics; Dr. Sarah Hartman, Assistant Professor of Education; and Cody Cocchi, Assistant Director of Service-Learning, will be making presentations at the conference. The 2015 Summit theme is Building Bridges between Education and Engagement.

“As a member of the executive committee, I will be exploring opportunities for connecting our students and faculty to other committee members’ campus programs for community-engaged scholarship and international service-learning,” Dr. Wurz said. “ Coastal Georgia is an annual sponsor of the Summit and in 2016, the regional conference will be held in Savannah, providing wonderful opportunities for collaboration with Georgia Southern and the University of Georgia as well as making broader participation by our students, faculty and community partners more convenient and affordable.”

Based on her participation in past conferences of the International Association for Research in Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE), including serving for two years as a conference proposal reviewer, she has been invited to serve as a member of the newly-formed IARSLCE committee on scholarship and publication. “This collaboration will help me bring the most up-to-date information about service-learning and scholarship to our campus and the community,” she added. “Service-learning is an essential element of our College’s mission and vision statement. I am honored to have such outstanding opportunities on the College’s behalf.”
