Management and communications innovator Bill Carter will be featured in the next Coastal Conversations on Leadership hosted by the College of Coastal Georgia’s School of Business and Public Management. The virtual event will be held on Wednesday, April 28 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Coastal Conversations is an ongoing series of live interviews featuring prominent Golden Isles residents who have had outstanding careers and are willing to share their experiences with the community. Carter is the current Brown Family Endowed Executive-in-Residence for the School of Business and Public Management, and in that role he shares his 40 years of business, leadership, and management experience with students and faculty.

Carter spent 30 years at AT&T where he held various positions in engineering, operations, marketing and sales, eventually becoming Sales Vice President of the Northeast Region of the United States, including the largest accounts of AT&T, such as IBM, GE, DEC, et al., as well as the financial, service, and insurance industries of New England. He served as the proposal manager of the company’s largest telecommunications bid ever—servicing the entire civilian branch of the federal government, worth approximately $25 billion. After winning the bid, Carter was made president and CEO of Submarine Systems International (SSI) Company, a new company at the time created by AT&T that focused on installing undersea cables for international communication between the United States and other countries. SSI got off to a rocky start, but by its seventh year, revenues reached $1.5 billion each year and a net income of $150 million a year. With the explosive growth of the internet, Carter had the idea of owning the undersea cables and selling internet service. He took the idea to AT&T but was rejected. Carter left AT&T to become one of the founders of Global Crossing and last served as President of Global Crossing Development Co. and Chairman of Global Marine, and was the Company’s senior executive in charge of developing, evaluating, and implementing an $8 billion international undersea and terrestrial network. He has also served on the Advisory Council for the International Telecommunication Union and has testified before Congress regarding the correlation of advanced communications and economic development.

The interview will be moderated by Professor of Practice of Marketing and Communications Scott Williamson. Williamson, a native of Brunswick, came to the College after retiring from Coca-Cola North America as Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications. During his 25-year career at Coca-Cola, he directed marketing communications initiatives for virtually all of the company’s brands as well as its sports and entertainment properties.

Community members are encouraged to attend the conversation and ask questions about Carter’s experiences and his thoughts on economic development in the area.
