Dr. Lawrence H. White to Discuss His Most Recent Book, The Clash of Economic Ideas
Brunswick, GA – The fourth lecture in the College’s public series, Economics and Liberty at Coastal, will be held Thursday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jones Building, Room 102. The program is free and open to the public.
The speaker will be Dr. Lawrence H. White, Professor of Economics at George Mason University and author of The Clash of Economic Ideas: The Great Policy Debates and Experiments of the Last Hundred Years (Cambridge University Press, 2012).
“In his most recent book, Dr. White ties the great economic debates and doctrines of the previous century to policies and trends that defined the times,” explained Dr. Skip Mounts, Dean of the School of Business and Public Affairs. ”His discussion of economic history and the impact on areas such as fiscal policy illuminates significant political developments, from the Great Depression to the New Deal and the Great Inflation, and insightful perspectives ranging from the development of socialism and fascism to free trade and public debt.”
Dr. White is noted for his expertise in the theory and history of banking. A Harvard graduate, he received his M.A. and Ph.D.from UCLA. He authored The Theory of Monetary Institutions (Basil Blackwell, 1999); Free Banking in Britain (2nd ed., Institute of Economic Affairs, 1995; 1st ed. Cambridge, 1984), Competition and Currency (NYU, 1989); edited volumes on banking as well as The History of Gold and Silver (3 vols., Pickering and Chatto, 2000) and a series. Foundations of the Market Economy, for Routledge; and has written on monetary theory and banking history for the American Economic Review and many other prominent professional journals. He serves as a member of the Academic Advisory Council of the Institute of Economic Affairs. Active internationally as a visiting professor, research fellow and lecturer, his regional connections include formerly teaching at the University of Georgia and serving as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta
