College hosts inaugural Cyber Education Day

Brunswick, GA – On Friday, October 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., the College of Coastal Georgia will host the inaugural Cybercrime and Cyber Security Symposium in the Stembler Theatre on its Brunswick campus.

Titled “Cybercrime and Cyber Security: What Difference Does it Make?,” this event will include discussions on the significance of cyber education to our national security; cybercrime investigations training for 21st century law enforcement professionals; Congress’ role in supporting cyber education; CCGA’s role in expanding cyber education; and the importance of cyber education to our community, industry and workforce. In addition to the discussion topics, continental breakfast and a lunch will be provided.

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (DLA Piper) will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers will be U.S. Congressman Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-01), Georgia State Rep. Alex Atwood (House District 179), CCGA President Gregory Aloia, Dr. William “Skip” Mounts, Dr. Tracy Pellett (Vice President for Academic Affairs), Cynthia Atwood (Lecturer of Criminal Justice), Connie Patrick (Director of Federal Law Enforcement Training Center), Marjorie Mathieu (Vice President of FACHE for Southeast Georgia Health System), Mason Waters (President of United Community Bank) and Matthew Doering (Chief of Glynn County Police Department).

The goal of this event is to bring awareness to the growing threats posed to our nation, our state and our communities due to the frequency, scale and sophistication of cyber threats, said Cynthia Atwood, Lecturer of Criminal Justice for College of Coastal Georgia.

“Some estimates place the number of unmet cyber-security related jobs in our country at 500,000. However, our story doesn’t have to end there. Through our Cyber Education Day, we hope to bring awareness to our community and industry leaders, members of our College Foundation and others of the critical need we face in educating our students so they can be well prepared to be a part of the solution,” Atwood said.

“CCGA has a unique opportunity to do so. We are now offering a Concentration in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense within our Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Through our partnership with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, we are also pursuing designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense. This designation is jointly bestowed by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency.”
