Enrollment Increases 3.8 Percent over 2016
For the fourth consecutive year, the College of Coastal Georgia has achieved record enrollment. The College enrolled 3,663 for Fall 2017, a 3.8 percent increase from the previous fall and a 21.8-percent combined increase during the past three years. The College’s record growth coincides with the University System of Georgia’s (USG) achievement of an all-time enrollment peak as well.
The College of Coastal Georgia achieved the second-highest percentage of growth among all USG member institutions, following the Georgia Institute of Technology at 9.4 percent.
Interim President Meg Amstutz believes the growth is the result of a number of factors.
“The College of Coastal Georgia has long been a true asset to the Golden Isles and the surrounding region,” said Amstutz. “But since becoming a four-year institution less than a decade ago, the College has increased in size and stature, with 16 majors currently preparing our students for today’s workforce.”
In recent years, the College has added a number of new academic programs that have attracted the interest of potential students. Among the newest degree programs at the College are:
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science
Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management
Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences
Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies
Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
Bachelor of Applied Science
Bachelor of Arts in Spanish (online)
Bachelor of Arts in French (online)
Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences
Coastal Georgia has also achieved several accolades in the past few years that have elevated the College’s profile in the Golden Isles, across the state, and beyond. These include the following:
Currently ranked as the #12 Top Public School among regional colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report
Ranked #1 Nursing Program (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) in examination pass rates by the National Council Licensure Exam in 2017
Achieved 100% placement rate for teachers within a few months of graduation
Ranked #2 most affordable public school for in-state students by U.S. News & World Report in 2017
Ranked #2 in lowest out-of-state online undergraduate tuition by U.S. News & World Report in 2017
While recognition is always welcomed, Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management Dr. Jason Umfress believes there is a special, often overlooked ingredient to the College’s recipe for increased enrollment.
“We’re excited to be able to offer our students a top-notch education in a small, caring environment,” said Umfress. “Students at Coastal Georgia receive the individual attention and support they need to pursue their unique dreams. As more and more students continue to learn about the unique benefits of the College, more and more will want to enroll and join the Mariner community.”
