Faculty to be Recognized for Contributions to Service-Learning

The College of Coastal Georgia’s Center for Service-Learning is hosting an online Service-Learning Faculty Appreciation Recognition event starting November 16 to honor faculty members who have contributed to the service-learning program in 2020.

The Service-Learning Faculty Appreciation webpage will be available to view online at https://libguides.ccga.edu/Service-Learning_Archive/FacultyRecognition starting at 9 a.m. Here, viewers can learn about each honored faculty member through a short biography and special sentiment shared by a colleague. The honorees are recognized by “levels” based on how many service-learning courses a faculty member has taught.

Service-learning engages students in a meaningful way where they leverage knowledge, skills, and attitudes learned in the classroom to apply them in real world situations that address community issues. Since its start in 2010, service-learning has become fully ingrained within the campus culture, and is in essence a part of the fabric of the College. This is greatly due to the faculty who have embraced and implemented service-learning components into their curriculum. Faculty have introduced over 4,100 students to service-learning, and contributed an estimate of over 100,000 hours of service, in partnership with over 170 community organizations. This semester, there are currently 27 service-learning course offerings—the highest count since fall 2016.

The service-learning program is a high-impact, experiential learning practice that has allowed the College to reach its stated mission of providing “excellence in scholarship and community engagement.” The Service-Learning Faculty Appreciation webpage honors faculty who worked diligently towards this mission and are helping students develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to leadership, personal growth, and civic identity.
