Five College of Coastal Georgia softball student-athletes were recognized at the 2018 Sun Conference Softball Banquet held Wednesday night at Lilly’s on the Lake in Clermon, Fla. Both Breanna Wells and Paige Alt earned spots on the All-Conference Team, while Alt, Morgan Cobb, Katie McGinnis and Kensey Solomon were named to the Academic Team.
Wells was the conference’s honoree for the designated player position. She had a stellar rookie season, leading the Mariners in batting average (.358), hits (54) and RBI (32). She, along with Alt, hit a team-best 10 doubles for the year. Wells and Alt were also second on the team in runs scored (16). Wells, who split time at first base and in the outfield, had 260 putouts for the season.
Alt was selected as the conference’s utility player after being a key component to the Mariners’ line-up. From the plate, Alt blasted a season-high six home runs this season and slugged a team-best .519. In the circle, Alt compiled a program-record 1.44 ERA, which currently ranks 24th nationally. She also ranks 36th in hits allowed (5.31 average) and 37th in opponent batting average (.207). She recorded 13 complete games in 18 games started, and struck out 77 batters in 126.2 innings pitched.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Conference, student-athletes must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and have been enrolled in their institution for two full semesters. Alt is a sophomore majoring in early childhood/special education. Cobb is a senior studying mathematics secondary education. McGinnis is a senior studying middle grades education. Solomon is a sophomore business major.
