Kids in College, the College of Coastal Georgia’s longstanding summer enrichment program, will return to the Brunswick campus and Camden Center this June and July to provide a unique, fun experience for elementary and middle school students.
Kids in College offers academic instruction in a fun, engaging way for children between the ages of 8 and 13 years old. The curriculum, which has been developed by certified educators, is a combination of morning classroom instruction and afternoon activities and field experiences, which includes both on- and off-campus excursions.
In Brunswick, the program offers four different camps over the course of six weeks. They include STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math), fine arts, sports, and leadership camps.
At the Camden Center, students will experience activities in culinary, STEM, and fine arts over the course of a week. There will be two identical sessions at the Camden Center.
“Kids in College is a great opportunity for young students to participate in something fun and meaningful during the summer,” said Jennifer Hatchel, associate professor of biology and director of Kids in College at the Camden Center. “The students had a blast last year. It’s fun to get them excited about learning. This year we’re excited to be incorporating art activities into their Kids in College experience.”
Through Kids in College, students can acquire fundamental skills and knowledge in key academic areas that will serve them well for a lifetime. At STEM camp, students will explore diverse topics related to science, technology, engineering, and math. Students will discover their artistic side at the Fine Arts camp through lessons in photography, theater, dance and music.
The Leadership camp will enhance a youth’s ability to lead and work in a group environment, and is perfect for students interested in public affairs, government, business, and law enforcement. Campers will enjoy tours, guest speakers and other team building activities. Students in this session must be 10-13 years old and submit documentation of a current physical with registration.
The Sports camp will teach the basic skills and abilities associated with athletics, under the instruction of former collegiate athletes and current youth coaches. It is open to campers ages 8-13 and documentation of a current physical is required.
Kids in College camps on the College’s Brunswick Campus will include:
At the Camden Center, the first session will be held June 11-15, and the second session will be June 18-22.
Along with a bagged lunch, student participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing, such as closed toed shoes, as there will be outside activities every day. An afternoon snack will be provided daily by the camp.
“Our summer camps offer young people the opportunity to explore different areas of interest in an environment where students can have fun and learn at the same time” said Chad Lassiter, director of Recreation and Wellness. “The Kids in College camps are great weeklong experiences that we hope will positively impact the lives of students for years to come.”
Early registration for the Brunswick camps is $155 per camper, per week, and initial payment must be submitted by May 4. The standard registration cost is $170. Each session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with drop-off beginning at 8 a.m. A late pick-up option (4:30-5:30 p.m.) is also available.
