The Tradition Continues: Signing the Sails!

Graduating seniors are making their mark at the College of Coastal Georgia by participating in the annual signing of the sails as they prepare to walk across the stage Dec. 15. This week, fall graduates began filling in blank spaces on the sails in the College’s logo left by their peers who graduated earlier this spring.

The number of signatures has grown over the years, reflecting the College’s increasing population. After graduation, the framed sails will be framed and hung alongside the other signed sails from previous years.

Brian Weese, coordinator of career services, said students look forward to signing and consider it a rite of passage.

“Years from now they can come back with their family and point out their signature,” Weese said.

Senior Mari Evans, a business major, was excited to be a part of the tradition.

“My freshman year, I noticed people signing them. Then my roommate graduated in May and signed. Since it’s a tradition, I wanted to be a part of it as well,” Evans said.

Seniors who haven’t signed will have another opportunity to be a part of the College’s history on Wednesday Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Campus Center and also at graduation.
