The international cast of Up with People hopes to make a positive impact in Glynn County and inspire its young people to change the world. The cast will be on tour in Brunswick March 26 to April.
Up with People is a global education organization that empowers young people between the ages of 17 and 29 to be positive agents of change in their communities and around the world. The organization travels on a five-month world tour with hundreds of young people from around the world, visiting communities throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico.
The Up with People cast wants to gain a personal perspective of the day-to-day life in the Golden Isles and will make a trip to the College of Coastal Georgia during their stay. Cast members will host a “Text, Talk, Revive Civility” workshop at the College on March 27 in collaboration with the College’s Let’s Talk Coastal program. The workshop will focus on civil discourse and cross-cultural interactions and will be held at the Anchor in the Student Activities Center on Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be an information booth and an Up with People admissions representative at the workshop for those interested in travelling with the group. Students may be able to earn academic credit through Up with People’s study abroad program.
While cast members are on campus, there will be an acoustic performance to get students excited about the groups’ show “Live on Tour 2018,” which will take place March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Brunswick High School Gym. Up with People is best known for its high-energy, upbeat, family-friendly musical show.
Up with People cast member Lauren Dunnewald, 18, originally from Denver, Colorado, came to the Golden Isles ahead of the cast to get things ready for their arrival. Dunnewald graduated from high school in Spring 2017 and plans to attend Macalester College in Minnesota in the fall. She joined Up with People in July and has travelled with the group for two semesters.
This past fall, the group travelled to communities on the east coast as well as Mexico, Germany, and the Netherlands. They also performed for Pope Francis in Rome. So far this spring, they cast has visited Colorado and Florida.
Dunnewald joined Up with People because she is a strong believer in raising cultural awareness and inspiring others.
“We inspire different communities around the world and bring the understanding that we’re all human,” she said. “We want to inspire young people and everyone to make a difference in the world, and let people know that it’s not too late to change.”
While in the region, Up with People members will participate in a number of service projects including the Marsh Madness Cleanups with Keep Golden Isles Beautiful (KGIB) on March 31 starting at 9 a.m. Up with People, KGIB, and community volunteers will work together cleaning up the areas underneath the F.J. Torras Causeway bridges.
“Live on Tour 2018” tickets are $12 for students/children and $15 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at https://upwithpeople.org/glynncounty, the Golden Isles Convention Center on St. Simons Island, and The Brunswick News office.
