In memory of Reg Murphy, a cherished supporter of the College of Coastal Georgia, we invite friends, family, and admirers to contribute to a special fund established in his honor. Reg’s dedication to our College and community left a lasting legacy, reflected in his many contributions to the school and the lives he touched through his vision and generosity. The Reg Murphy Center for Economic and Policy Studies, dedicated in 2015, stands as a testament to his commitment to enhancing student education and fostering community development.
Reg joined the School of Business and Public Management faculty in 2012 as the inaugural executive-in-residence. His extensive experience and accomplishments, combined with compassion and wise counsel for students, made him an invaluable contributor to academic and campus life. As executive-in-residence, he lectured classes, organized informal meetings with students, collaborated with faculty, and provided students with career advice. He described the position as “sharer-in-chief.” Reg also served as moderator of the Coastal Conversations series, where he interviewed prominent residents in the Golden Isles who had outstanding careers and were willing to share their experiences with the community.
Twice named Volunteer of the Year by the College Foundation, Reg also played a pivotal role in building our athletic programs. In 2009, he headed a campus-community Athletic Futures Committee that created the vision and strategy for athletics at the College, which had just become a baccalaureate institution. He was a founding member of the Friends of Mariners, created the Murphy Golf Teams Support Fund to benefit the men’s and women’s golf teams, and established the Murphy-Kuchar Putting Green on campus for students—embodying his love for the game of golf and his dedication to student success.
Reg’s career as a journalist, USGA president, and National Geographic Society CEO was marked by an unwavering dedication to excellence and service. His remarkable life, filled with bold leadership and resilience, inspired countless individuals. All funds raised through this memorial will be dedicated to the College’s athletic programs, continuing his legacy by supporting the future of our student-athletes and celebrating Reg’s enduring impact on the College and the community he loved so deeply.
